Steam has just added another free title to its growing catalogue of narrative indie games. Tails of the North is a story RPG set in a frozen fantasy world where animals are the heroes. It’s a short, dialogue adventure with light RPG elements, puzzle-solving, and a heavy focus on atmosphere.
You play as a white cat named Cest and a crow companion called Ka, travelling together through snow forests, abandoned ruins, and forgotten places. Their mission is unclear at first, but clues slowly begin to emerge, left behind by voices, echoes and strange phenomena that feel both magical and ominous.
The game combines visual storytelling with puzzles and exploration. There’s no combat system or inventory management, instead, Tails of the North offers a reflective experience focused on narrative, mood and setting. Fans of quiet, emotionally driven indie titles like Journey or Spiritfarer may find something familiar here.
A quiet RPG journey through a snow-covered land
It was created by a solo developer using Unreal Engine and released as a completely free standalone project. While short (around 30–45 minutes of playtime), the game features fully voiced dialogue, hand-crafted environments and a custom soundtrack. It’s clearly a labour of love, and its thematic depth stands out, exploring themes of memory, grief and the passage of time.
A free game with story, voice acting and no combat
Tails of the North is available now for free on Steam. No ads, no microtransactions, no early access labels. Just a compact narrative game waiting to be discovered.
